Updated: Oct 30

As summer approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate our upcoming vacations – a chance to unwind, explore new destinations, and create lasting memories. But if you're a hobby photographer wanting to start selling stock photos, your summer vacation (or any vacation really) offers more than just relaxation. It's a golden opportunity to build up your portfolio and start generating income from stock photography.

I've previously written a post called How I make money on stock photography, and I strongly recommend that you check it out. I covered all the basics in that post and told you about my preferred stock sites. I always feel the biggest urge to take stock pictures these days when I'm on vacation, and in this post, I'll tell you why your summer getaway is the perfect time to capture captivating images and kickstart your journey into the world of stock photography. In fact most of my stock portfolio are pictures taken on my vacations!

I sell my pictures on two stock sites and have portfolios consisting of 89 and 105 images, and I make about five dollars a month. It might not sound like a lot, but it is a completely passive source of income! Lets take a closer look at why your summer vacation is a perfect time to take pictures and build your portfolio.

Time for Observation and Exploration

One of the greatest advantages of a summer vacation is the luxury of time. Whether wandering the streets of a bustling city or trekking through scenic landscapes, take advantage of your surroundings.

How often in your everyday life do you get a chance to just observe your surroundings and look for unique details around you? If you're like me, it might not be as often as you'd wish. But on a vacation, you have time to observe the unique architecture, immerse yourself in the local culture, the flora and fauna, and capture the essence of your destination through your lens. Find small details and objects that are special to your holiday destination, or streets and markets that capture the vibe of the city or country.

Exposure to New Experiences

Traveling to a new destination exposes you to many new experiences – from sampling local cuisines to potentially witnessing traditional rituals and celebrations. Embrace these cultural experiences and use them as inspiration for your photography. Moments of everyday life make for compelling stock photos that resonate with buyers worldwide.

Seasonal Themes and Vibrancy

Summer brings with it a palette of vibrant colors and textures that are perfect for photography. From the golden glow of the summer evenings to the lush greenery of forests and parks, summer offers endless opportunities to capture nature in all its glory. Take advantage of the season's vibrancy to create images that stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Outdoor Dining and Leisure: Dining al fresco, lounging on sun-drenched beaches, and exploring outdoor markets are all quintessential summer experiences. Use these moments to capture atmospheric scenes that evoke the leisurely pace and relaxed vibe of summer vacations.

Curiosity and Creativity

Travelling during vacation ignite our sense of curiosity and adventure, encouraging us to explore new places, try new activities, and embrace spontaneous moments. Take your camera with you! Seek out unique perspectives, experiment with different compositions, and capture the unexpected moments that make your vacation truly memorable.

In conclusion, your summer vacation is not just an opportunity to relax and unwind – it's also a chance to hone your photography skills and build up your stock photo portfolio. So pack your camera, and keep an open mind.

With a bit of curiosity and a keen eye for detail (looking for the small details is my favourite way of taking interesting pictures of locations and cultural aspects that are already photographed many times), you'll come back from your vacation with stunning images that showcase the magic of summer.
